YouTube began laying the terms from the service inside a letter seen by IDG News Service. The letter was sent Wednesday to participants in YouTube’s Partner program, which lets YouTube video makers earn money from ads and merchandise.
It’s not clear once the new service will launch, nor the value or what it is going to be called.
“While we can’t comment on ongoing discussions, giving fans more alternative to benefit from the content they adore and creators more chance to earn revenue are constantly amongst our top priorities, ” a YouTube spokeswoman said.
YouTube will pay video creators by using the service 55 percent of the entire net revenues from subscription fees, consistent with changes towards the terms from the Partner program. That’s a similar percentage partners collect from advertising. The alterations get into effect on June 15.
A YouTube spokeswoman declined to comment about how revenue could be divided.
It’s unclear what kinds of content will certainly be offered with the service, though a number of it may be premium or exclusive content that can’t be found elsewhere. YouTube might position it like a premium service using its own programming, perhaps akin to Netflix or HBO’s new streaming service.
Its success is prone to depend upon the amount and diversity of video partners YouTube gets.
YouTube may have lots of competition. Along with Netflix, there’s also Vessel, a brand new paid video service from the previous CEO of Hulu. As well as on Thursday, Oz, an Icelandic company, will launch its own subscription video service globally.
However it won’t be the very first subscription service for YouTube. Late last year the corporate launched its music-focused Music Key paid service in beta.
